Located at the confluence of the Elk River and Big Sandy Creek, Clendenin is the most southern river town and was founded in 1904. With a population of 849, Clendenin is home to small-town charm you won't find anywhere else in Appalachia.
In 2016, a devastating flood rocked the community, displacing hundreds and causing hundreds of millions in damages. Since then, the city has begun reinventing itself as a destination less than thirty minutes from the state's capital.
Today, downtown is home to several shops, restaurants, a downtown stage, and the Clendenin Brewing Company. In 2021, the state announced its longest rail trail to date, which is set to span from Clendenin all the way to Sutton. This, coupled with the newly announced Air Raid Mountain Bike Park, is set to continue the growth of this charming river town!
